Don’t Sleep on the Mochi Donuts at Dragon Star Oriental Foods

They’re stretchy, dense, and delightfully chewy

Dragon Star Oriental Foods in St. Paul was already one of our favorite international supermarkets. Then they went and invited Soga Mochi Donut to open a dedicated kiosk in-house and we straight up lost our minds. 🤯

The Japanese-style donut counter soft-launched last Christmas. When you sink your chompers into their signature rings, you’ll understand why it’s taken off: These cats make some of the tastiest donuts this side of the Pacific. They’re stretchy, dense, delightfully chewy, and just the right amount of sweet.

Flavors rotate regularly; check Soga’s Facebook page for its daily menu. Our last haul featured matcha, grape, and yuzu (Japanese citrus FTW!), but past hits include taro, pandan kaya, toasted coconut, pistachio, mango, black sesame, red velvet cake, rose, tiramisu, strawberry, and churro.

Orders can be placed online at sogamochidonut.com or in person. The counter at Dragon Star is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 or 4:30 p.m.—or till sold out. Donuts are $2.50 or $3 a pop; half a dozen will set you back $16.50; and a dozen costs $30.
