Reasons to Love Minnesota No. 107: Metz’s Hart-Land Creamery

Cows and curds, curds and cows

You don’t have to cross state lines to find good cheese curds. Some of the best we’ve stuffed down our gullet come from Metz’s Hart-Land Creamery in Rushford, about two hours south of the Twin Cities. ⁣

Jeff and Mariann Metz got into dairy farming in the mid-‘80s, but they didn’t open their creamery until 2014. Now they have more than 200 cows on their property, including Holsteins, Jerseys, and Brown Swiss. Some of the youngsters hang out near the farm shop, hamming it up for the cameras, alongside baby goats and friendly farm dogs.⁣

Though Metz’s products are sold in more than 50 locations throughout Southeast Minnesota, its small on-site store is well-stocked with squeaky-fresh cheese curds, heavenly smoked string cheese, farmstead blocks, and local raw honey. For you wild ones, the curds come in a dozen fun flavors, including Chili Lime, Bloody Mary, and Ranch.⁣

Need more of an excuse to make the trek south? Consider dropping in for Metz’s occasional pizza farm nights, which include curds (fresh or fried, your choice), gelato, milking demos, and kiddo-friendly movie screenings. ⁣🍕🍦🎥🐄
