Whoa, guys… Did you know Minneapolis is home to a World Beard and Moustache Champion?! MJ Johnson, a.k.a. @razorhater, has won more than 50 contests, including four U.S. National Beard and Moustache Championships. His account is packed with fun photos, as Minnevangelist co-founder Ashlea Halpern discovered when researching her latest story for New York Magazine’s The Strategist: “The Best Face Masks for Men With Beards.”
She pitched the idea after noticing a guy with ZZ Top-caliber facial hair struggling to wear a flimsy paper mask at Surly Brewing. Surely he can do better than that, she thought. And now he can — thanks to the great advice of local guys like MJ, Chef Yia Vang of Union Hmong Kitchen and Vinai (pictured below), and Chris Donnelly of SouthSide Vintage & Quality Goods, not to mention a dozen other hirsute experts from farther afield. Among their top 😷 recommendations were locally made pieces from Steller Handcrafted Goods, Mille, and Mini Minua by Miah Gabrielle.
Big thanks to celebrity barber and gallery owner Marcus Harvey, The Gay Beards, Jeffrey Moustache, Al “Wonderstache” Underwood, Madison Rowley, Greg Schoenwolf of the Salty Saints Social Club & Facial Hair Society in Salt Lake City, Bryan Nelson and Taylor Welden of the Austin Facial Hair Club in ATX, Beard Team USA, and everyone else who weighed in for this very hairy story! If you enjoy seeing creative, inspired facial hair in all its waxed and groomed glory, these gents’ accounts are well worth a follow.
And hey, know a bearded fellow who could use some help finding a good mask? Say no more.
